CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK’S DAY IN MARBELLA

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all our Irish and American friends! Today, March 17th, we join millions around the world in celebrating St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

At Marbella Home Selectors, we take great pride in our Irish roots and our strong connection with the Irish and American communities looking to find their dream home in Marbella and the Costa del Sol. What better way to celebrate our shared heritage than by honoring this special day?

A Bit of St. Patrick’s Day History

St. Patrick, born in Britain in the 3rd century, was kidnapped by Irish raiders at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland, where he lived as a shepherd. After six years, he escaped and reunited with his family. Later, he became a priest and then a bishop. Following a vision, he returned to Ireland to spread Christianity, using the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity.

Legend also tells us that St. Patrick banished snakes from Ireland, symbolizing the eradication of pagan beliefs. He passed away around the age of 70 and was buried in Ireland, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

St. Patrick’s Day and the Irish Diaspora

Throughout history, millions of Irish people emigrated, particularly during the Great Famine of 1847, with large numbers settling in the UK and USA. Today, an estimated 50 million Irish descendants live in the United States, playing a key role in politics, business, and culture. One of the most famous Irish Americans was President John F. Kennedy.

How St. Patrick’s Day is Celebrated Worldwide

St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world. Some of the biggest celebrations take place in:

  • Dublin, Ireland – Home to the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade
  • New York City, USA – Hosts one of the oldest and grandest parades
  • Chicago, USA – The river is dyed green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day
  • London, UK – Massive parades and events take place across the city

Bars and pubs worldwide join the festivities, with Guinness flowing freely and the tradition of “Drowning the Shamrock”—a toast to good fortune.
